The early Christians were an Easter People. In the darkest hours before the dawn following Christ’s crucifixion, they did not lose faith in Jesus – nor in His promise that He would return.
All of us encounter empty tombs in our lives: Moments of great confusion following periods of great suffering and anguish when we realize the reason for it is past.
The fact that this film continues to be debated so passionately after all these years seems less an indictment of the film, than a testament to the passion that Jesus continues to evoke in people.
It’s easy to be distracted by the commercialism and exploitation of Easter — and to forget what Easter is really about.
